Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa)  This beautiful dark grained hardwood comes from Central America.  Typically found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.  Cocobolo is also known as Caviuna, Nambar, Pau preto and Funera.  The oil in the wood gives it a fine natural polish.  It is a favorite because of it's attractive color, texture, durability and waterproof characteristics.  The Cocobolo tree is medium sized and grows to a height fo 45 to 60 feet.
Purpleheart (Peltogyne paniculata)  This wood is best known for it's unusual purple color.  It is found most commonly in the Amazon Basin and frequently grows in Columbia, Guyana, Surinam and Venezuela.  It is also known as Nazareno, Morado, Tananeo and Guarabu.  This wood has exceptional strength (far stronger than Maple, Oak or Teak) with a high tolerance to shock loading. Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxil)  This elegant orange brown hardwood tree is found primarily in central and tropical West Africa in areas extending from south-western Nigeria to Zaire.  It often grows in small groups and is common in dense equatorial rain forests.  it is also known as Mbe, Mbil, Mututi, Ngula, and Bosulu. 
The Padauk tree is quite large and grows to heights of 100 to 130 feet, clear of branches to 70 feet and has a trunk diameter from 24 - 60 inches.   Padauk possesses excellent weathering properties and will last for more than 25 years in contact with the ground without any preservative treatments.
Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii)  Also known as California black walnut, this wood is a true member of the walnut family, this wood has more color, grain accent and overall beauty than most other walnuts.  It is frequently and exceptionally beautiful wood.  This species is more likely to have interlocking grain normal American black walnut.  The variety of grain pattern in claro walnut, like black walnut is never-ending.  For a piece of Americana as well as beauty and durability in your fine writing instrument, consider claro walnut.
